School & peer support

Achinyamata for Mental Health

Students taking part in a Rugare school mental health club session

The Achinyamata for Mental Health program is delivered through school-based Mental Health Clubs that introduce students to mental health awareness, how to support others, and how to build everyday resilience. Rugare facilitators lead the clubs, with selected student leaders co-facilitating on certain days to strengthen ownership and peer learning. Alongside practical coping tools such as stress management, self-care, and early identification of mental health and substance use risks, the clubs also build a culture of peer support within schools. Students who need further help are linked to Tulankhawa Talks, our psychosocial support service for counseling, substance use prevention, and addiction support.

Creative engagement
Young people engaged in a creative Rugare YouthScape activity

YouthScape is a youth mental health engagement program in collaboration with Zaluso Arts, a dynamic creative hub and arts collective that uses visual arts, digital media, storytelling, and immersive experiences to empower young creatives and address social issues through art. The program creates safe, creative spaces where young people can openly discuss mental health and life challenges while engaging in interactive activities that make expression more natural and engaging. Facilitators guide discussions on topics such as relationships, identity, stress, work pressures, and substance use, while creative activities help participants explore and express emotions in a relaxed environment. YouthScape promotes connection, emotional expression, and peer support, while encouraging help-seeking behavior and linking young people to Tulankhawa Talks for further psychosocial support when needed.

Media & storytelling

Our podcast hosted by the Rugare team brings together guests from different fields to talk openly about mental health and wellbeing. Through honest conversations and shared lived experiences, it creates a space where people can reflect, learn, and feel less alone in what they are going through. The podcast is built on the belief that when we share our stories, we begin to heal faster and together.
